They say, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” How true.

As an avid fisherman for more than 30 years, Rick has spent thousands of hours in the beautiful waters of British Columbia. With the opportunity to experience such diversity in fishing—from streams and rivers loaded with spawning salmon to lakes nestled amidst breathtaking mountains--it became apparent there was a void in the fishing market. Specifically, the plastic plugs available at most fishing stores were effective in only a narrow range of trolling speeds. Rick wanted greater versatility in his gear…and so did other fishermen.

By combining his love of fishing and his woodworking hobby, Rick started Black Creek Fly & Tackle on Vancouver Island in 2007 with the introduction of our first product, the Wigglewood lure.

Not only did the opening of this company give him a chance to do what he loves as a career, but it allowed him to help other fisherman by filling a void in the tackle market, especially for other Canadian anglers who could appreciate a product made for and by another Canadian angler who understands the sport…and what they need to net the catch.

Over the years, Black Creek’s product lines have expanded, as have the services. In addition to making each lure and fly by hand, the company also offers fishing classes, and fly-tying classes.
